I am a researcher and Assistant Professor of Strategic Management in the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). I hold a Ph.D. in strategic management and entrepreneurship from the University of Central Florida, M.B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Massachusetts, and a B.A. in economics and management studies from St. Olaf College.
My research focuses on the role of business in society. I study how firms pursue Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, with a primary focus on CSR portfolios and firms’ impact on social and environmental issues. Business can be a critical force for good in society, with the potential to have a significant positive impact on the socio-environmental challenges that humankind faces in the 21st century. It is important for managers to understand how they can (and why they should) minimize the harm their firms create with respect to social and environmental issues (e.g., climate change) and how they can pursue CSR portfolios to create holistic value for society and stakeholders.
I have published in the Journal of Management and presented my work at a variety of conferences (e.g., AOM, BCERC, SMA, SMS). I have also participated as a panelist at the SMA annual meeting, and earned the Best Reviewer award from the SMS Stakeholder Strategy interest group. Aside from research, I serve on the communications team of the AOM’s SIM division, and on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Management.
Over the course of my career, I hope to publish research that contributes to management theory and practice in a way that helps to advance the social, environmental, and financial sustainability of local and global economies.
